Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About
MYRTLEWOOD
From the original Myrtlewood Factory,
Real Oregon Gifts
The myrtlewood industry originated in the late 1800's along
the Southern Oregon Coast. As one takes a closer look at myrtlewood
craftsmanship, the oldest factory emerges as a story of history and success. The
Myrtlewood Factory, located five miles north of North Bend, Oregon, at the
entrance to the Dunes National Recreation Area, is the oldest in the world.
In 1911, the mother company of Bayview Manufacturing turned
their first product under the name of Duncan's Myrtlewood Crofters. This was the
first commercial effort of retailing myrtlewood products.
From the Original House Of Myrtlewood
The Oregon Connection
The House Of Myrtlewood was started in 1929 by William Beaumont.
The original location was near the present day Chevron Station on 1st Street.
Beaumont, originally from North Dakota, started the business as a way to support
his family after the box company where he worked closed down. His son, Daryl
Beaumont, worked at the business during his school years and then returned to
work full-time after graduating from OSU. When Daryl enlisted in the Navy and
served in WWII the senior Beaumont ran the business until his son's return, and
then left the area for Southern California.
Zumwalt’s Myrtlewood,
Began in 1946 by Al Zumwalt, a man of Swiss German
heritage, the factory continues in business under the ownership of Dave & Kathy
Takahashi.
Rogue River Myrtlewood
This little factory sits in Gold Beach and is
currently owned by Mike and Caryn Merica. It was originally opened in 1948 and
has been in operation since.
